Speaker: Bob Sigall
Subject: The Companies We Keep 2
Date Speaking: 12/6/07

I've spoken to you club about my first book and wanted to let you know I've finished a follow upto it - The Companies We Keep 2. It will be out in December.

Two talks I've created are appropriate to that time of the year:

1) Japan's Fatal Pearl Harbor Miscalculation. A seemingly minorshift in the Pearl Harbor attack strategy led to the U.S. beating themat the Battle of Midway less than six months later. Experts say thiserror prevented the use of nuclear weapons in Europe and shortenedthe war in both the Pacific and Atlantic.

2) How Christmas came to the islands. The missionaries did not celebrateChristmas since it's not in the Bible. So how did we come to celebrate it?It's a fascinating story.

3) Amazing Hawaii Stories. My usual book talks focus on other amazingstories I've uncovered. Groups can ask me to focus on any of these topics:
What Imelda Marcos thought of Frank De Lima's impression ofher.
Which local organization was inspired by an Oprah show.
How Elvis Presley helped build the Arizona Memorial.
Who Duke Kahanamoku was named for.
How the U.H. Rainbows got their nickname.
When Babe Ruth played baseball in Hilo.
How Hawaii residents played a role in creating fourmajor sports.
Which famous musical group met at Punahou?
How wallabies came to Kalihi Valley.
Where they almost built the state capital.
Who was Hawaii's first Japanese visitor in 1844?
How Magic Island almost had two real islands and six hotels.
The man who predicted in 1923 that Japan would bomb Pearl Harbor.
Who Kui Lee wrote I'll remember you for.
Which other names were considered for Aloha Stadium?
The man who flew 2000 miles, then sailed his seaplanethe rest of the way to Hawaii in 1925.
